I research consumption at the intersection of ecological economics, behavioral science, and sustainability transitions. Policies, nudges, and environmental messages have not reversed the trend. Why do we keep consuming the planet — even when we know better?

Earlier in my career, I helped build startups valued at nearly $1B and raised over $70M. That experience led to an uncomfortable realization: growth without direction is not progress — it can accelerate decline. As overconsumption intensified, burnout became normalized and ecological limits were pushed further, it became clear that modern economies are not simply responding to demand — they are engineered to produce it.

Dopamine-driven reward cycles reframed as “choice.”
Stress regulation packaged as “lifestyle.”
Status signals embedded as “identity.”

Consumption is no longer just economic activity — it becomes a mechanism for emotional regulation, social positioning, and identity formation. Ecological crisis persists not because we lack knowledge, but because the systems driving consumption are aligned with how humans seek reward, stability, and identity.
